Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt: ne or oxi?

by Emily Hill

I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour conducted by Clever Girls on behalf of Dannon. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program but my opinions are my own.

For more information and recipe ideas, visit www.oikosyogurt.com or www.Facebook.com/oikos. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

Let me start with this:

My family—or rather, my 4-year-old and 14-year-old— are huge fans of Dannon’s Light & Fit vanilla yogurt. In fact, I buy at least three quarts of it every time I go to the grocery store. They eat it for breakfast and lunch…and sometimes as a side dish for dinner. Topped with granola, it’s the perfect snack. (We’ve tried other yogurts, organic included, and they beg me to buy Dannon. Every. Time.)

And follow it with this:

Though I don’t do the quarts of vanilla yogurt, I do love the Dannon Light & Fit smoothies. I downed those babies like they were going out of style. Unfortunately, they did go out of style and I haven’t seen them on the grocery store shelves in a while. I’m kinda sad about it, really. More than sad. Maybe a little depressed.

Those disclaimers being said, let me tell you my thoughts—or rather thought—on the new Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt: I am not a fan.

I gave both the fruit-on-the-bottom strawberry…

…and honey flavors a try.

Dannon uses an authentic Greek straining process to give their Oikos yogurt a rich, creamy and thick texture but it’s that extra thick texture that didn’t sit well on my tastebuds. It did sit well on my spoon, though.

That Oikos is seriously defying gravity!

You know, it could also be due to my limited experience with Greek yogurt. I’ve only ever used it in homemade fruit smoothies, and I’ve never eaten it plain or flavored or even plain topped with something yummy like granola or fresh fruit. I wasn’t used to the slightly tart taste and it was a bit much for my sweet-lovin’ tastebuds.

Though you won’t find me eating Dannon Oikos straight from the container, I am a huge fan of using it in place of typical yogurt in smoothies and other recipes because it is lower in fat than regular low-fat yogurt. (Dannon Oikos plain and fruit-on-the-bottom Greek yogurt contain 0% fat; Oikos traditional blended varieties contain about 3% fat). It also has twice the protein found in most low-fat yogurt. And that thick texture? I don’t love it straight from the cup but it is great for thickening smoothies!

Have you tried Dannon’s new Oikos Greek Yogurt?
What was your first (or second) impression?

P.S. Maybe I’m just smoking something, because Dannon Oikos berry flavors (0% fat) beat Chobani 2 to 1 in a taste test.* (Guess I won’t be buying Chobani any time soon!)

P.P.S. The Greek word for “yes” is “ne” and the Greek word for “no” is “óχι.” Gosh, I love the interwebs!

Disclaimer: I have partnered with Dannon to help promote the Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt Series. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program, which includes writing about the promotion and product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.*

So I and my kids LOVE Greek Yogurt and flavored Greek Yogurt as well. But yes Danon’s is just gross….I felt so bad the day I made them eat it and didn’t know why they were whining so bad till I took a bite. We threw out the rest of the packages.

I am actually a big fan of it (and the Chobani)..but the other “thin” yogurts??? I can’t touch em! I need that thickness to cut down on my gag reflex. and it’s only certain flavors, nothing too crazy.

Isn’t it funny how it all comes down to personal preference on texture sometimes? I know a lot of people love the Greek yogurt. Maybe I’ll grow to like it!

Hi! I’m getting ready to publish my review for CleverGirls, too, and it’s funny: I also was not a fan, but for basically the opposite reason you gave! I think Dannon’s Greek yogurt is TOO sweet! (But I looooove my plain, tart, thick-as-all-getout Greek yogurt.) I will definitely have to try this stuff in a smoothie, though!

I will confess, I am a sweet rather than tart or savory kind of girl. I’m sure that’s why I prefer the typical (more sugary) yogurt! Do you top your plain, tart, thick-as-all-getout Greek yogurt with anything?

I am a major fan of greek yogurt. once you get used to it; the “other kind” tastes too sweet and not real. and you can use it in place of sour cream, too!

I love the idea of using it in place of sour cream! I bet I could get used to it that way and then ease into eating it like “normal” yogurt. Thanks for the great suggestion!

If you like the sweet rather than tangy, you’ll The Greek Gods yogurt with honey. It’s not low in calories, but you mix in fresh blueberries and it’s a little bit of Heaven. Macey’s carries it. If you try it, I’d love to know what you think.

I tried the Dannon Oikos yogurt and I couldn’t finish it. It has an after taste that hits you while it’s still in your mouth. Not my favorite.

I will definitely have to try it. I’m always willing to give things a second shot. Well, except quail eggs and chicken hearts. I had enough the first taste around. Eewww…

I just don’t do greek yogurt…but that isn’t saying much, because I don’t really like yogurt in general.

we eat a ton of chobani here (prefer the 2%). I actually tried an Oikos honey yesterday at a friends, and I really liked it. It’s thicker than Chobani, and sweeter than the chobani honey flavor too.

If Oikos is sweeter than Chobami, I’m going to definitely have to pass on the latter! I have a very pronounced sweet tooth. ;)

IMO: chobani…hated it. Made me feel like I was putting joint compound in my mouth. Not that I ever have, but I can imagine that’s what it would feel like when I eat greek yogurt. For those of you who are not HGTV DIY’S, it’s kind of like putting grade school paste in your mouth. That was until Dannon Oikos. To me the strawberry, fruit on the bottom was very good and although it was thick, it was really smooth, which was the selling point for me. Most greek yogurts are not just thick, but pretty gritty. Dannon was thick but still felt silky.

Thank you for your feedback! Overall it seems Chobani is the least favorite, so I’ll definitely be passing on that one! Glad you liked the Dannon Oikos! Perhaps I just need to get used to that thicker texture; but then again, I loved Dannon’s Smoothies, and they were really thin!

Tried Dannon Fruit on the Bottom Greek yogurt today. Tried the blueberry flavor. For $1, I got to enjoy exactly 3 small blueberries. Fabulous. I really think that Dannon could do better.
