My friends can do hard things {take 2}
I know the saying you’re used to seeing reads “I can do hard things,” but the saying that most applies to me is the one you see in the title of this post. I’d like to think it’s an original saying (I have yet to see it vinylized) because I’m rarely original, but even if it’s not, it is near and dear to my heart. So much so I had my good friend Kim from the r house couture design a necklace with this saying permanently hand-stamped on it.
…
Other than a miscarriage early in the pregnancy, a titch of marriage therapy and a business with some residual debt, I have been blessed with a life where I haven’t had to do many hard things…unless you count the sheer willpower it takes to NOT run away to Vegas when I’m about to lose my mind. (Today is a good example.) But I have a few friends who are dealing with some serious crap, and other than being their figurative cheerleader (I don’t own any pom poms), all I can do is keep them close to my heart—literally.
I’m wearing it now as I anxiously wait to hear from a friend who’s anxiously waiting to hear the results of a test she had done earlier this week. We are convinced it’s just a silly infection, but if it’s not, she can do hard things because she is an amazing, beautiful, strong woman. (Sometimes I have to remind her of this fact, but I totally don’t mind.)
My friends can do hard things.
This necklace is for the friend I used to visit teach who recently had a mastectomy. (Thankfully the procedure was all that was needed to fight the cancer; the outlook is very good.)
This necklace is for the friend who is dealing with an idiot of a husband who somehow forgot for a moment how fabulous—and fabulously sexy—his wife is.
This necklace is for the friend who has struggled for a good five years to make ends meet while supporting her husband in his entrepreneurial pursuits.
This necklace is for the friend who who is single-momming it while working and going to school and living with teenagers.
This necklace is for the friend, a mother of four, who is working 12-hour graveyard shifts on the journey to get her nursing degree…and for the husband, also a friend, who is supporting her in the process.
This necklace is for the friends who have struggled with post-partum depression, infertility, weight issues, bi-polar disorder, crappy thyroids, crappy jobs and crappy spouses.
My friends can do hard things. And I am their personal cheerleader.

You are the nicest person ever. This post was written before I knew you well or you’d be on the list. YOU can do very, very hard things, my friend. Love you!
