Back-to-school items for Utah’s homeless children

2012 August 3
by Emily Hill

Yesterday I didn’t think twice when buying multiple pairs of colored skinny jeans as part of the girls’ back-to-school shopping. I threw in a couple pairs of shoes each (and another maxi dress for me) and considered it a fraction of what I’d be spending in the next couple weeks to get all the kids ready for school.

And that doesn’t include back-to-school supplies like backpacks, notebooks, lined paper, pencils and crayons.

I hate to admit it, but the back-to-school needs of Utah’s homeless children has never crossed my mind while stocking up on school supplies at Target and Walmart. But thanks to Intrepid’s Road Home Apple Tree campaign, I’ll be purchasing extra school supplies this year.

Road Home Apple Tree program

Or you could just click here.

The Road Home Apple Tree campaign collects back-to-school clothing, shoes and supplies for over 100 children living at the Road Home homeless shelter in Salt Lake City so those children are better prepared for the school year.

Just imagine what it might feel like to arrive to class the first day of school totally unprepared.

It would suck. Big time.

KSL Road Home Apple Tree program

This year more children than ever are in need of back-to-school basics. The Road Home Apple Tree program needs YOU to support the cause not only by purchasing a needed school item for a homeless child but also by spreading the word about the campaign.

To participate, visit one of the 35 locations listed below and select an an apple with the name of a child. Simply purchase the needed item (new and unused) and drop it off at any of the campaign partner locations from Provo to Ogden.

Road Home Apple Tree program

After the campaign ends on August 13th, Intrepid will deliver the clothing and school supplies to the Road Home before the beginning of the school year.

During the seven-year history of the Road Home Apple Tree, more than 13,500 articles of clothing and school supplies have been donated, benefitting more than 380 children living in the Road Home shelter.

And now you get to be a part of it. How awesome is that?

From now until August 13th, you can pick an apple at any of the following locations:

Thanks for such a great post Emily. Going back to school with new supplies is so important for kids. I even remember how excited I was when I was in school. I’ll be making a trip to my nearest Payless.
