Top 10 Reasons to Visit Lake Powell

2012 August 20
by Emily Hill

I was totally going to post my recipe for fettuccine alfredo with garlic basil chicken but I’m exhausted from a crazy fun few days with the family and friends at Lake Powell.

I know, I know. You don’t feel sorry for me at all…and I’m way okay with that.

Nathan and I have never taken the kids—or each other—to Lake Powell, so when a friend with an awesome boat and all the necessary skills asked if we wanted to road trip it down there, we were all over it!

It took a lot of time and energy to plan and execute this great family vacay, but it was totally worth it. We can’t wait to do it again.

Well, next summer. After I’ve recovered.

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Lake Powell

  1. The water is a balmy 80 degrees.
  2. The canyons make for some beautiful scenery. You’ll see all kinds of land features you won’t find anywhere else.
  3. Lake Powell has some seriously great places for cliff diving. (Warning: You may wet yourself when you see your six-year-old jump off a 15-foot cliff. Fortunately you can jump in the water to disguise it.)
  4. That balmy water is also nice and calm (unless a house boat goes by while you’re pulling a ginormous tube).
  5. The lake is fun for people of all ages and abilities. You can stay on the boat the entire time or try your hand at wakeboarding.
  6. The use fee for a week is only $15.
  7. The blue sky is absolutely gorgeous.
  8. It’s a doable drive from Salt Lake—unless you go through Payson because you forgot to put the destination in your GPS.
  9. There’s nothing like watching your kids hang on for dear life while riding that ginormous tube.
  10. You’ll make some seriously fabulous memories.

Top 10 Things You Should Know Before Visiting Lake Powell

  1. Ticaboo Resort in Ticaboo, UT (population like 7 1/2) uses the term “resort” loosely. Plan to spray for bugs and bring an ultraviolet light to check for scorpions on your bedroom floor.
  2. You can expect to pay European prices for gas on the lake.
  3. If you’re coming from northern Utah and find yourself grabbing lunch at a Wendy’s in Payson, you missed the turn-off in Spanish Fork that would’ve saved you close to two hours of drive time.
  4. Kids seem to get tired of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches after eating them for three days straight. Not sure why but whatever.
  5. Lizards are adorable and worth the hours it takes to catch one.
  6. Nothing cleans out the sinuses like a jump from a 20-foot cliff. That same jump is pretty good at causing atomic wedgies. (Warning: Unless you want a bruise that extends from the back of your knee to just below your rear end, make sure your legs are pointing straight into the water.)
  7. You’ll want to pack gallons of sunscreen. No. Seriously. Gallons. Three applications of SPF 50 is not enough.
  8. A side trip to Goblin Valley takes less than a half hour and is pretty cool. For even more fun, do it in 95-degree weather. You’ll need that sunscreen.
  9. Don’t tell your daughter to catch a fish with her bare hands unless you actually want her to catch a fish (or two) with her bare hands.
  10. You’ll make some seriously fabulous memories.*

I’m so happy you had a great time. I love Lake Powell! We haven’t been there for about 10 years. I think it’s time we get back down there.

Great photos! I went to Powell with my grandparents when I was younger and always vowed to take my kids there. We went last year and pretty sure my kids feel/felt the way I did. The place is just magical!

I haven’t ever been to Lake Powell, but I always wanted to rent a house boat and stay for awhile.

A houseboat is the way to go, seriously. My dream is an adult vacay with friends and no kids–houseboat, ski boat, wave runners and lots of sunscreen. :)
