Jury still out on Heelys HX2 Bolt shoes
George has been begging me for “you know, those shoes with the wheels in the bottom” for who knows how long, so when Heelys, the be-all, end-all for cool shoes with wheels contacted me, I was all over doing a review.
I let George pick out the style he wanted from their newer fall line. He settled on the Heelys HX2 Bolt for two reasons: one, they’re orange and two, they have light-up flames.
SOLD.
The shoes arrived and were out of the box in record time. George had to check out the LED lightning bolts (hence the name “Bolt”) and yes, they light up when you walk. These HX2 Heelys are touted as great for beginners because they come with two wheels in the sole—think of it as training wheels of sorts. You remove the front wheel from each shoe when your child feels comfortable in his new rolling shoes.
George was ready to take those Bolts for a test-drive as soon as we popped the wheels in the shoes. He donned his helmet, I donned my cell phone and we headed outside.
What a crazy ride!

Yeah, it’s not as easy as it looks.
George hasn’t tried them on since, though he has removed the wheels and worn them as regular tennis shoes…once. Heelys can be pretty heavy shoes; these ones weigh about 13 ounces. When your 6-year-old weighs just over 50 pounds, an extra 2 pounds is quite a lot.
Considering how quickly George lost interest in his new Heelys, the jury is still out as to how we feel about these wheeled shoes. I’m just disappointed I didn’t have Nathan review a pair. They do make adult-size Heelys, and catching Nathan taking a pair for a test drive would’ve made for some fantastic video.
Disclaimer: Heelys provided me with Bolt shoes for this review. My opinions—and the super awesome video—are my own.

okay, so I heard these are super uncomfortable shoes to walk in…that is the only reason why I haven’t bought them for Savannah. I think they would be fun to try as adult though! :)

They really aren’t that great for walking. They are heavy and kind of clunky, but if you use them mainly for the wheels, you’re probably okay. Your best bet may be checking KSL for a used pair in good condition and see what she thinks.
