Breaking the news about Santa
Thanks to an interview on Care.com, I am able to share one of my not-so-awesome mom moments with the (online) world. Madison is still traumatized and I will have guilt for life.
It doesn’t help when I’m reminded how badly I handled things. (Love you, Mom!)
Here’s an excerpt from “Breaking the News About Santa” on Care.com:
Do your kids make holiday wish lists? How do you keep a handle on spoiling children?
We changed things up a few years ago by having our kids create wish lists with four different categories: Need, Read, Want and Wear. They list things they want under each category and we choose one item from each category to give them Christmas morning. We throw in one gift from Santa (usually the best gift from their list) and that’s it-five gifts total.
…
My favorite question: What is the ONE reason you really hate to love the holidays?
That was a fun one to answer.
I may have referenced lighted garland and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.

Having seen your parenting skills in live action drama I can definitely say you are an awesome mom. How many other mothers’ of teenagers get texts asking when they will be home just because their teen misses them?! And now I’m going to go read your interview. Happy Friday friend!

That is true. Thanks for the reminder that she still likes me even though I dashed her dreams of a “real” Santa Claus.

I loved your interview. I’m dreading having the “talk” with the kids. They did say the don’t really believe in the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny. So, maybe next year?

We are doing Want, Need, Wear, Read this year too. I think I’m going to put in a “no repeats” rule next year. My son wrote “shoes” for everything except the Read part. *facepalm*

That is a great idea! We get a couple repeats so I think we’ll institute that same rule next year. :)
