Of Monsters and Men: “Mountain Sound” & meets of the swim variety

2013 January 18
by Emily Hill

Today was Madison’s last swim meet before regionals. This is her first year on the high school swim team and she’s loving every chlorinated minute of it. I had hoped she’d follow in her mother’s footsteps and claim the butterfly as her favorite stroke with the IM as her favorite event, but alas, she’s taken to freestyle and backstroke.

Good thing she’s kicking butt and taking names or I’d be seriously disappointed.

Today she beat her personal best in the 50yd Free and the 100yd Backstroke while her relay team beat their personal best in the 200yd Free Relay and 400yd Free Relay.

If that were a Facebook status, I’d quadruple “like” it.

Along with swimming, Madison and I share a love for music . . . especially songs from Of Monsters and Men. (I totally discovered them first.) Our latest favorite is “Mountain Sound,” which I’ll leave you with now in honor of her rockin’ performance in the pool yesterday.

Catchy, no?

Watching your children discover their interests is one of the best parts of this parenting gig. Here’s what they’ve discovered so far:

  • Madison loves swimming, cello, Just Dance 4 and late-night Google chats with her mom.
  • Lauren can’t live without Coco, sketching, viola and reading.
  • George is all about Legos, the color orange, experiments and Root Beer.
  • Livi could easily spend hours cooking with Mom and drawing countless pictures of her family.

I kind of like those kids of mine.

Yay Madison – high five, I was a swim kid too, representing north west England. I was a butterfly and freestyle ninja. I had a 4 pack and everything… now I can barely see my toes. HAHAHA. :-)

I’m sure you could still swim laps around me! I haven’t done the butterfly since high school years and years ago…

They are pretty much raising themselves (as you well know). At least they’re doing a good job of it! ;)

Good for you. The time commitment is a killer though right? When they succeed it is totally worth it!!

I agree! I love, love, LOVE seeing where my children’s interests go. My 5-year-old could craft all the live-long day and even the toddler is already showing an obsession with animals. Even though I don’t like crafting OR animals, I love seeing their interests! Congratulations to Madison on kickin’ so much trash!
