Island green smoothie

2013 April 5
by Emily Hill

I am finally getting back into the green smoothie thing after a long hiatus. I started with my favorite peachy green smoothie, but when I saw Budget Gourmet Mom’s tropical green smoothie, I knew I had to try it. I absolutely adore pineapple…and silly me, I never thought to throw it into a smoothie.

But throw it in I did…and holy cow was it good! I didn’t have fresh pineapple so I used frozen pineapple chunks courtesy of Costco. And I didn’t have apple juice (or any fruit juice for that matter), so I went with my favorite alternative: almond milk.

This island green smoothie, as I affectionately call it, is my most favorite ever.

Like, EVER.

Even Madison, who is super picky about her green smoothies, enjoyed it. (I had kind of hoped she wouldn’t because I would have totally polished off her glassful.)

I don’t know why, but I never thought to throw pineapple in either! I am the worst green smoothie maker. FOR REAL. Can’t wait to try this, thanks em and K!

I love that Costco has a HUGE bag of frozen pineapple chunks next to the veggies. I totally stocked up.

Oh I love this and my Smudge will too. She’s such a fan of green juice, so weird, I thought she’d run and hide. I get the Costco pineapples every week, they are definitely a go to. Pinned and pinned!

Yay! Let me know what you think! I might throw some mango in there next time too…or figure out how to add coconut (maybe coconut milk?) so it tastes more like a pina colada. :)

You definitely need to try using a very ripe Champagne mango in your next smoothie too. Yummy!!
For that coconut flavor you’re craving, try opening up a young Thai coconut and pouring the water and
coconut meat into it. I add this to all my smoothies, can’t get enough of it :)

See that’s funny because I would never think of a green smoothie without using pineapple!
I will try your version. My go to is water, spinach, Greek yo, banana & pineapple. Maybe some chia if I’m feeling crazy.

I do need to incorporate Greek yogurt into the mix because of its high amount of protein. Thanks for the reminder!

I wonder what would happen if I substituted the almond milk with regular milk and a little coconut? And maybe not put the spinach in?

I bet it would taste even more fantastic…and wouldn’t be such a “lovely” shade of green. ;)

I have to take a break every now and then, but after all the Little Caesar’s Hot-N-Ready pizza and crazy bread I just ate, I’ll be having one tomorrow for sure.

Thank you for the recipe. I’m off to the grocery store and planning to try out this drink tomorrow AM. I also found two more green drink recipes here in case you are interested – one uses chard and one uses kale as the greens.
